Démographie et santé dans les pays en développement. Sexualité, adolescence, santé de la reproduction, liens entre fécondité et santé/survie des enfants. Insertion des jeunes immigrés au Canada et en Australie - adaptation des comportements sur le temps. Démographie économique. Population et l'environnement.

Biographie

Professeur au Département depuis 1991, mes intérêts de recherche portent principalement sur les grands enjeux des populations dans les pays en développement, avec une concentration sur l’Afrique subsaharienne.  Mes recherches récentes comprennent:

  • Effets de la baisse de la fécondité sur le devenir des enfants : éducation et activités de travail (vérification des hypothèses du dividende démographique dans le contexte de la ville de Ouagadougou);
  • Transitions vers l’âge adulte: sexualité et santé de la reproduction, mariage, etc. (Afrique, Brésil);
  • Soutien des personnes âgées (Burkina Faso et avant, Brésil);
  • Déterminants de la santé des enfants et liens entre les risques de mortalité et les comportements de fécondité (Afrique, et avant, Bangladesh);
  • Intégration sociale des jeunes de souche immigrante au Canada/Québec.

J'ai été directeur du Département de démographie de 2010 à 2014 et vice-président de la Fédération canadienne de démographie de 2011 à 2014.  

Après deux mandats au conseil de direction de l’Union internationale pour l’étude scientifique de la population (UIESP/IUSSP), j'ai été élu vice-président pour la période 2014-2017.  En 2018, je suis devenu président de cette association pour une période de quatre ans.  J'ai aussi présidé le International Outreach CommitteeEarly Achievement Award Committee (2013-2016)  (1998-2001) et membre de la Population Association of America.
